B.C. is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions with targets below 2007 levels:
The CleanBC Roadmap to 2030 is our plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while growing a diverse and clean economy. Through our Climate Preparedness and Adaption Strategy, we are also preparing for the impacts of a changing climate so our communities and economy continue to thrive.
We’re working towards a future where new buildings and vehicles produce no emissions at all; where we use less energy and create less waste; where communities and businesses are ready for a changing climate; and where industries are the cleanest in the world. By finding clean, efficient solutions while preparing for a changing climate, we will strengthen B.C.’s economy and create opportunities for people across the province.
B.C. is taking action to reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, prepare for the impacts of climate change and transition to a clean economy. Learn more about our emissions targets, the plans, strategies and goals that guide our work, and our progress to date.
Through CleanBC, the Province is raising the standards for new construction, encouraging energy-saving improvements in existing homes, schools and workplaces, and supporting communities in reducing greenhouse gases and preparing for the effects of climate change.
Around the world, investors are recognizing the need for a faster transition away from fossil fuels and towards clean energy solutions. Through CleanBC, government is supporting the innovation and technology needed to meet global demand and establish B.C as a leading exporter of low carbon products and solutions.
Through CleanBC, government is working with industry and others across the province to reduce pollution, improve efficiency and adopt new technologies. We're also supporting new opportunities for cleaner growth that is globally competitive and builds on B.C.'s clean energy and clean tech advantages.
Whether it’s getting the kids to school or getting goods to market, transportation is a big part of daily life. B.C. is taking action through CleanBC to accelerate the move to cleaner transportation options and prepare our transportation networks for climate impacts.
Preparing for climate change strengthens our ability to respond to extreme events like wildfires, flooding and heatwaves, as well as more gradual changes like water shortages and sea level rise. B.C.’s Climate Preparedness and Adaptation Strategy helps to protect ecosystems, lower long-term costs and keep people and communities safe.
Since 2010 the Carbon Neutral Government Program has helped Public Sector Organizations (PSOs) achieve carbon neutrality. PSOs can take climate action by reducing emissions, enhancing energy efficiency, and embedding climate resilience in planning and infrastructure.
B.C. annually publishes an inventory of historical provincial greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions along with a projection of future GHG emissions.
Other GHG datasets include GHG emissions reported by industrial facilities, carbon neutral public sector organizations, local governments and communities.
Local governments play a critical role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to a changing climate through their management of buildings, transportation, water, waste and land use.
As the original stewards of the lands we now call British Columbia, Indigenous Peoples offer important insights and knowledge which is essential to effective climate adaptation and climate change mitigation.
